Jay Z and Beyonce celebrated their 5th anniversary in Cuba last week. At first I thought nothing of it. But apparently Americans simply can’t book a flight and a hotel and head to Cuba. You’ll need to travel with a Cuba travel organization that has official license from the U.S. Department. It doesn’t look like the celebrity couple was on a tour from the photos I’ve seen.
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart sent a letter to Adam Szubin, director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control at the Treasury Department, on Friday asking for more information about the type of license that Beyonce and Jay Z received, for what reason, and who approved it.
U.S. law prohibits the licensing of financial transactions for “tourist activities” in Cuba (Section 910(b)(1) of the Trade Sanctions Reform and Export Enhancement Act). So basically Americans can’t spend money there.
Jay Z and Beyonce are not above Federal Law! If I can’t go to Cuba, They can’t go to Cuba. I’m glad those members of Congress are investigating their trip. I hope they have their proper licenses, or they could be facing fed time.
