Before I start hurting people feelings I want you to understand. I am not an NBA conspirist. I am an NBA realist to the fullest degree. Its simple mathematics. Let me explain something to you all.
The majority of the NBA owners don’t care about winning a championship. They only care about putting enough players on the team with at least one “Star” which is the player that you like the most. He doesn’t have to be the most talented but you would buy his jersey and support him. As long as you show up the team as done their job. What is their job?
To keep you entertained. Just like the WWE.
Now I know someone is reading this and saying I’m crazy but answer this question:
Since 1982 how many teams have won an NBA Championship?
Los Angeles Lakers (9)
Boston Celtics (3)
Detroit Pistons (3)
Chicago Bulls (6)
Houston Rockets (2)
San Antonio Spurs (4)
Miami Heat (1)
Dallas Mavericks (1)
Philadelphia (1 Shouts out to Mike Love!)
Thats only 9 teams in 29 years of Basketball ladies and gents. Nine organizations with the Lakers leading the way with 9. Compare that with 13 in the National Football League and 20 in Major League Baseball. Why is it that only eight teams in almost 30 years of hoops have won a ring? Simple: The majority of the NBA owners only care about fielding a competitive team so you, the consumer will enjoy quality entertainment. Not to win a Championship people. No title for you.
Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert watch along with Millions his cash cow Lebron James take his talents to south beach for less money. What did Gilbert Do? Write a letter to the Cavs fans in Comic Sans to let them know its real out here. EFF LEBRON!!!
The main reason he was pissed was because the man who drew the fans to the Quicken Loans Area no longer would be dressing in the home locker room. Now the Cavs starting lineup would consist of wack, old players and Baron Davis. Who wants to come to Cleveland without Lebron? Hell name me a big free agent that considered Cleveland while Lebron was there? Don’t worry I’ll wait.
Now enter New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul.
Paul became one of the many NBA stars that not only wanted to leave his team he wanted to dictate where he went. Preferred destinations included the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Clippers and Lakers. All of a sudden it was here we go again. First it was Lebron then Carmelo now Paul & Orlando Magic Center Dwight Howard wants to leave? So I ask you this question.
Who is gonna go to a New Orleans Hornets game without Chris Paul or Orlando Magic game without Howard?
Don’t worry… I’ll wait.
This is why according to YahooSports.com ,Dan Gilbert, The same owner that lost his star player sent this e-mail to NBA commissioner David Stern:
It would be a travesty to allow the Lakers to acquire Chris Paul in the apparent trade being discussed.
This trade should go to a vote of the 29 owners of the Hornets.
Over the next three seasons this deal would save the Lakers approximately $20 million in salaries and approximately $21 million in luxury taxes. That $21 million goes to non-taxpaying teams and to fund revenue sharing.
I cannot remember ever seeing a trade where a team got by far the best player in the trade and saved over $40 million in the process. And it doesn’t appear that they would give up any draft picks, which might allow to later make a trade for Dwight Howard. (They would also get a large trade exception that would help them improve their team and/or eventually trade for Howard.) When the Lakers got Pau Gasol (at the time considered an extremely lopsided trade) they took on tens of millions in additional salary and luxury tax and they gave up a number of prospects (one in Marc Gasol who may become a max-salary player).
I just don’t see how we can allow this trade to happen.
I know the vast majority of owners feel the same way that I do.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?
“When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?”
The line above makes me shake my head. Since 1982, 22 of the now 30 NBA teams name should be changed to the Washington Generals! Can you honestly tell me Joe Johnson, shooting guard of the Atlanta Hawks is worth a max deal?! NO but if he leaves Atlanta (who doesn’t have the strongest fan-base) who’s gonna go the game and really believe that the Hawks are legitimately trying to win an NBA Championship?
Or teams like Minnesota, Toronto, Washington, Charlotte, L.A. Clippers? I can keep going people.
Yes, Marc Gasol became a max player. To a team who quite honest would have to over play him… Because what star player is gonna come play for the Memphis Grizzles.
Don’t worry, I’ll wait.
I don’t like “super-teams” myself but players like Paul, Lebron, Melo, Amare, Chris Bosh & Dwight want to win a Championship.
Gilbert only care about fielding a team to be competitive enough for you to come to the game. Not only for the Cavs but the New Orleans Hornets. The Team he co-owns with 28 other owners. They can’t lose the New Orleans market (again) and in a city thats struggling how would it look if the star player is traded to L.A.?
I love the NBA but when it come down to it most NBA owners don’t care about winning an NBA title. Just enjoy the entertainment value.
At least wrestling admits it.
