A Chicken Wing Shortage May Affect Superbowl Parties

In a story that will make a man, woman or child yell out, “DEAR BABY JESUS NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ! ! ! ! !” brace yourself for this one there MAY NOT BE AS MANY HOT WINGS FOR YOUR SUPER BOWL PARTY THIS YEAR.

The National Chicken Council released a report that said the demand for wings this year is at “an all-time high” due to decreased wing production caused by the high cost of corn and feed prices. Wings are currently the highest priced portion of a chicken and cost $2.11 a pound in the Northeast, up 12 percent from last year.

The organization has lowered the estimated number of wings to be consumed during Super Bowl weekend to 1.23 billion wing segments, 12.3 million less than last year.  That’s about 1 percent, says the council.

“Chicken companies produced about 1 percent fewer birds last year, due in large part to record high corn and feed prices,” Bill Roenigk, chief economist and market analyst at the Washington, D.C.-based National Chicken Council said in a release.  “Corn makes up more than two-thirds of chicken feed and corn prices hit an all-time high in 2012, due to two reasons:  last summer’s drought and pressure from a federal government requirement that mandates 40 percent of our corn crop be turned into fuel in the form of ethanol.  Simply put, less corn equals higher feed costs, which means fewer birds produced.”

Americans are serious about their chicken wings.  Second only to Thanksgiving, Super Bowl weekend is the biggest eating day of the year, and chicken wings are the most popular dish.  To give you a picture of just how many wings fan will chow down on, The National Chicken Council says if those 1.23 billion chicken wing segments were laid end to end, they would stretch between the San Francisco 49ers Candlestick Park and the Baltimore Ravens M&T Bank Stadium 27 times.

Last year, gastronomes were sent into a tizzy at the news of a possible shortage of another American comfort food stable: bacon. Due to rising food costs and drought, prices for bacon and other pork products are expected to rise as much as 10 percent this year, but chefs and home cooks breathed a collective sigh of relief as U.S. agricultural economists dismissed reports of a global bacon shortage.

As far as the wings are concerned Roenigk said you may have to pay more, but there will be wings aplenty –no matter who you’re rooting for.

“The good news for consumers is that restaurants plan well in advance to ensure they have plenty of wings for the big game,” he said.
The Superbowl is set for Sunday February 3,2013 when the NF Champion San Francisco 49ers take on the AFC Champion Baltimore Ravens

At first when you hear about this before you know the whole story you would probably automatically think  that this is “….in thats what your dumb ass gets news…” But this story actually isn’t like that.

A big thing when it comes to sports teams and major events are for the mayor’s of the respective cities to make small friendly wagers with one another. Well this one here came with a bit of a price.  Denver Mayor Michael Hancock (pictured) lost a bet that he made with Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake that required him to do the Ray Lewis signature pre-game dance after the Denver Broncos lost to the Baltimore Ravens to advance to the AFC Championship.

According to Amber Miller, Mayor Hancock’s spokeswoman, the mayor suffered an unspecified injury during “pre-game” warm-ups on Monday to pay off the wager, but he later pulled a muscle and will fulfill his promise after he heals and he insists that he is in no way trying to renege on the bet.

But how do hurt yourself that bad to do this……

Baltimore Ravens Linebacker Terrell Suggs tears Achilles Tendon

Well it looks like Terrell Suggs wont be ham-boning it up with Ray Lewis this upcoming NFL season because he’s OUT OF IT.

The NFL Defensive Player Of the Year tore his Achilles tendon while playing basketball and is scheduled to have surgery next week and will more than likely miss the entire 2012 NFL Season.

I bet Suggs could really use one of those Ray Lewis motivational speeches right now, but I bet its a pretty sure bet this is how some Ravens fans feel.

Super Bowl 46: New England Vs. New York Giants

Tom Brady and Eli Manning

After one of the best “Championship Sundays” in recent memory the Super Bowl is set and it’s a rematch. Super Bowl 46 will pit the New England Patriots against the New York Giants. This will be a rematch of Super Bowl 42 when the Giants stopped the Patriots for finishing the 2008 season undefeated.

New England got to the big game by defeating the Baltimore Ravens when Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff missed a 32 yard field goal to send it into overtime. The G-Men survived overtime against the San Francisco 49ers when kicker Lawrence Tynes booted a 31 yard field goal for the win.

To add to the Super Bowl drama, the game will be played in Indianapolis Lucas Oil Stadium which is the home of Brady rival and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.

Will Brady get his revenge on the Eli Manning and the Giants for Super Bowl’s past or will Eli protect the Manning name on his brother’s home field?

Shock all across the NFL today as the Baltimore Ravens fell to the New England Patriots 23-20 in the AFC Championship game. A dropped pass by wide receiver Lee Evans & a blown field goal from kicker Billy Cundiff sealed the Ravens fate. After the game a video went viral of a unnamed Maryland man who was upset to say the least that his beloved Ravens was sent home so shockingly.

Damn somebody might wanna get him a drink.
